Everything DirtMap can do, in detail — from maps and recording to convoy, trip videos and OBD-II.
🗺️Maps & orientation
The main screen is an OpenStreetMap-based topographic map that also shows offroad tracks. From the layer switcher you can flip to satellite or an outdoor map, and turn on a POI layer (camping, drinking water/springs, fuel, ambulance/hospital, service, viewpoint, cell tower).
A separate trail-difficulty colour overlay grades offroad tracks green/yellow/red/black from the OSM tags (smooth dirt road → rough rocky trail). A built-in legend explains every colour and shape.
🌧️Weather & rain radar
Overlay a live rain radar (RainViewer) on the map to see precipitation moving in real time, and get a weather alert icon for your position (cold, storm, rain, wind).
🧭Track recording
Tap the red button to start GPS track recording right away — no chooser, one tap. Recording runs in the background with the screen off; a persistent notification shows while GPS is active and you can stop it any time.
If the app is killed before you stop, the next launch offers to resume (or save/discard) — your distance isn't lost. On stop, the track is uploaded as a route and appears under "My routes" for navigation or sharing. Import and export GPX freely.
🎬All-day recording & trip video
A separate all-day recording runs in the background for an end-of-trip summary video. Snap geotagged photos along the way — saved even with no signal and uploaded, once back online, pinned to where you actually took them.
From the day's track you can generate a map-flyby video: the map follows your track while your photos float in at the right spot, ending with a stats card (distance, time, top & average speed). Portrait (9:16) or landscape (16:9).
📐Area survey
Walk the boundary of a plot (land, base camp, parking, hunting ground) and DirtMap saves it as a polygon and calculates the area in m²/hectares. The result shows as a filled shape on the map and can be renamed, exported or deleted.
🧭Route planning & navigation
Two modes: manual (drop points and it connects them along roads) and point-to-point (A→B). Both give turn-by-turn navigation with an instruction bar and voice cues at turns, plus off-track alerts. Choose an offroad, road or on-foot routing profile.
📡Convoy & walkie-talkie
A convoy is a private group you join by invite (a shareable link or QR code). Everyone sees each other's live position on the map. Hold the microphone button for a 1–15 s Push-to-Talk voice message that plays automatically on everyone's phone — like a CB radio; on Android Auto / CarPlay it plays over the car speakers.
The leader's trail is drawn from your current position forward, so following the group is easy. If you stray off it, use "Navigate to leader" to get back.
📁Routes, folders & sharing
Organise saved routes into folders with custom icons and colours; a route can sit in several folders. Share a single route or a whole folder with another DirtMap user by email — anything you later add to a shared folder shows up for them automatically. Manage and revoke every share from one place.
🚙Vehicle & documents
The vehicle manager holds your vehicles (plate, description, photo). For each you can set expiry dates for inspection, insurance and tax — the app notifies you 7 days ahead and then reminds you daily until you update the date.
🔌OBD-II diagnostics
Pair a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter (e.g. ELM327) to see live data on the map overlay: speed, RPM, fuel level, temperature, battery voltage. The diagnostics screen reads fault codes (DTC) so you can see what triggered the check-engine light.
📥Offline maps
Download an area in advance from the offline manager and the map works with no signal. (Convoy, sharing and trip-video rendering still need a connection.)
